From Struggle to Strength: How Udo's African Restaurant and Grocery Thrives in Midway

………………………….

A Business Built on Resilience
Meet Michael Udo, owner of Udo’s African Restaurant and Grocery, a staple of the Midway neighborhood for over 15 years. What began as a grocery store has expanded into a restaurant, which proudly celebrated its grand opening in September 2023.

During the challenges of 2020—the pandemic and the civil unrest following the murder of George Floyd—Michael’s business faced immense difficulty. “Our area saw so much destruction. Businesses were closing, and we had to shut down for two weeks,” Michael shared. For him and his team, protecting the business meant staying on-site, even sleeping in the premises, to safeguard against potential looting or damage.

A Community-Focused Effort
Despite the challenges, Michael and the surrounding businesses found ways to give back. “We bought snacks, water, and pops for the people, hoping to build understanding and protect our space,” he explained.

Support from the MN PROMISE Act Grant
When the MN PROMISE Act grant opportunity came along, it was a lifeline for Udo’s. While the application process was rigorous, Michael appreciated the state’s careful scrutiny to ensure funds went to eligible businesses.

“The grant made a huge difference,” Michael said. “It helped us support our employees and purchase much-needed equipment. Without it, recovery would have been even more difficult.”

The Impact
Thanks to the grant, Udo’s African Restaurant and Grocery has continued to thrive, providing essential goods, delicious meals, and employment opportunities for the Midway neighborhood.
